How it is madeRings on a half-offset grid, sized so neighbours touch, with a knot ellipse where four loops meet. Each ring is one path whose inner ring winds backwards, so the hole is punched by winding rather than by fill-rule. The background is left transparent on purpose, which is the point of open work. A dark offset copy under each ring keeps it legible on the grey card.
