How it is madeColumns of V stitches, aligned in columns rather than offset like brickwork, which is what stockinette actually does. Each stitch is TWO tapered yarn legs leaning together, not a filled V: a solid V with a highlight and a shadow is a tile, and a field of tiles is a roof, which is what the first two attempts looked like. The dark ground between the legs is the shadow you see between strands. The gauge is deliberately coarse at 46 units, eight stitches across the stamp, because a realistic fine gauge is mush at thumbnail size and costs four times the geometry. The wool is picked per stitch from four values so no two neighbours match.
