How it is madeThe real truncated-square tiling: octagons at circumradius 0.5412 of the pitch with vertices at 22.5 degrees plus 45k, and the leftover at each grid corner is a square on its point of half-diagonal 0.29289 of the pitch. Every number is derived rather than fitted, which is why one joint width works everywhere. The star inside each octagon is the eight-point figure made by two crossed squares, valley radius 0.76537 of the point radius.
